Ban Ki-moon: New UN chief from Asia 潘基文:来自亚洲的联合国掌门人 Ban Ki-moon, 62, former foreign minister of the Republic of Korea, will succeed Kofi Annan as the eighth UN secretary-general, becoming the second Asian in 35 years to lead the world body following U Thant. Ban has pledged to be a "bridge-builder"and lead a dynamic and courageous United Nations after he takes over on January 1. 2. Fidel Castro: Ailling veteran leader 菲德尔卡斯特罗:病痛缠身的资深领导人 Cuba's veteran leader Fidel Castro, 80, has dropped out of public view since undergoing abdominal surgery in July. Fidel's brother Raul, 75, has been acting president since Fidel went into the hospital. US intelligence officials claimed that Castro had terminal cancer and would never return to power, but this assertion was denied by the Cuban Government and the president's Spanish doctor JoséLuis Garcia Sabrido. 3. Muhammad Yunus: 'Banker to the poor' 穆罕默德尤努斯:穷人的银行家 Muhammad Yunus, 66, earned the nickname "banker to the poor" by giving tiny cash loans-often the equivalent of a few dollars-to the poorest of the poor in Bangladesh. The notion has be放come known as microcredit, and has spread to other countries, giving thousands of people the opportunity to pull themselves out of abject poverty. Yunus and his Grameen Bank were jointly given the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. By that time the bank had helped more than six million borrowers, the vast majority of them women. 4. Rumsfeld had twice offered President George W. Bush his resignation at the height of the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal, but the president refused to accept it. But as the situation in Iraq worsened, Bush was obliged to accept his defence chief's resig-nation. 5. Abe: Japan's youngest post-war PM 安倍:日本战后最年轻的首相 Shinzo Abe, 52, grandson of a former prime minister and son of a former foreign minister, became Japan's youngest post-war prime minister and the first premier born after World War II in September. While emphasizing a stronger Japan-US alliance, Abe also pledged to improve relations with Asian neighbours, which deteriorated due to his predecessor Junichiro Koizumi's repeated visits to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine. Abe has also put revising the current US-drafted constitution at the top of his agenda. 6. Margaret Chan: 1st Chinese WHO chief 陈冯富珍(玛格丽特陈) :第一位中国籍世 卫总干事 On November 9, 2006, Dr Margaret Chan, 59, was elected director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), the first time a Chinese national has been elected to head a specialized UN body. The former Hong Kong health chief took an oath to serve the world and signalled her determination to tackle weak spots in global disease surveillance. 7. Dan Brown: 'Da Vincl Code decipherer' 丹布朗:"达芬奇密码破译者" Dan Brown is the US author of numerous best-selling novels, including the NO 1 New York Times bestseller, "The Da Vinci Code,"-one of
